Standing Desk
I will be the first to say that not all standing desks are created equal.
There are a lot of options out there that are very functional, but not all would fit the clean and modern aesthetic I love.
But don't worry! I found a beautiful and easy-to-assemble all-in-one standing desk that will fit beautifully into any home while also enabling you to relieve some issues that come along with sitting all day!
Why did I get a standing desk?
As many people continue to work from home (even if it is just part-time), being comfortable and productive (while sometimes still in our jammies) has become super important.
It is something that is very important to me anyway.
I spend a lot of time sitting at my computer and over the years, sitting has become hard on my body.
I love to move and exercise and while I try to get a good balance between the two, I often find myself doing things like standing while I eat just because my body wants to stand instead of sit!
With more and more people working from home over the last few years, standing desks have become more popular, and many more options have become available!
So I decided to start looking into them to see if they were really worth the hype.
From the research I did, I learned that standing desks can help improve your posture, increase energy levels, reduce back pain, and reduce other risks associated with prolonged sitting.
It definitely intrigued me!
So let's dig in a little more:
Benefits of using a Standing Desk
Here are some of the benefits associated with using a standing desk:
- Reduces sitting time: Sitting for prolonged periods has been associated with several health problems and, since using a standing desk can help reduce the amount of time spent sitting, it can help lower the risk of certain health problems.
- Burns more calories: Standing burns more calories than sitting, which can help with overall health and wellness. A study found that standing burns approximately 0.15 more calories per minute than sitting. I know that doesn't really sound like a lot, but little things add up over time especially when it comes to healthy habits.
- Improves posture: Sitting for long periods can, unfortunately, lead to poor posture and back pain. Does anyone else find they have the worst posture ever when sitting for a while? I know I do. Standing desks can promote better posture which is something I am personally working to improve right now.
- Increases energy and focus: Standing can increase blood flow and oxygen levels in the body, which can lead to increased energy and focus. For me, that 3pm slump hits me hard some days...but I've found that it's really hard to get sleepy while standing.
- Improves mood: Standing can help improve moods and reduce feelings of stress and fatigue. Sign. Me. Up!
Cons to a Standing Desk
While standing desks do have a lot of amazing benefits, there are a few things to consider that might not be as beneficial to some:
- Fatigue and Discomfort: Yes, standing desks can improve our energy levels, but if you stand for too long, it can actually have the opposite effect! Standing for long periods can be tiring and can lead to fatigue and discomfort, especially in the legs and feet. So it is definitely important to be able to both sit and stand and give your body some variety throughout the day.
- Cost: Standing desks can be more expensive than traditional desks. It's important to balance price and quality. The standing desk I have is of very nice quality, has several amazing features, and I am truly very happy with it. But it is definitely important to research well before purchasing.
- Limited movement: While standing desks promote more movement than sitting desks, they can still limit movement if the user stays in one position for too long. So while this can help, it is still important to take breaks to walk around and move your body.
- Assembly: Some standing desks can be heavy and difficult to assemble. You may want to enlist help for set-up or if you need to move it.
I ended up finding a ton of positive reasons to switch to a standing desk, and a few cons, but I was pretty sure I could work through them to find the perfect standing desk for me.
In the end, I realized that I would want a desk that gave me the ability to sit AND stand, and hopefully switch between the two easily. And of course, one that would look fabulous in my space.
So what did I do?
After looking at the pros and cons for years, I knew that a standing desk would be in my future as soon as I could make it happen.
I try to live an active lifestyle and I knew that a standing desk could give me the ability to change my position more often throughout the day which would help to keep my body moving and more mobile throughout the day.
I was also hopeful that it would help me feel less stiffness than I often feel when I sit at a desk all day long.
So when Flexi-Spot reached out to me about their All-In-One Standing Desk (Comhar Pro Standing Desk Q8), I was seriously excited to get my hands on it!
I was able to receive the desk, put it together, and give it a long test run to really see how this desk would work for me.
HERE is a link to the exact Desk I received.
Here are a few things I LOVE about this Flexi-Spot standing desk:
- The Flexi-Spot height-adjustable standing desk has a very strong motor that allows you to change the exact height of the desk with the push of a button.
- PLUS I was able to pre-program up to 4 different heights so I can always have the perfect height for sitting or standing ready to go.
- In addition to that, I love that it has built-in USB charging! This will help so much with cord management and being able to always ensure my devices are plugged in and ready to go.
I do want to make a note though that this desk is a bit on the heavier side and it is important to have a second set of hands when assembling or moving this desk.
But I don't want to miss the most important part of my whole blog post!
How to Style a Standing Desk: 8 easy ideas
If you know me, I want everything in my home to have a function and be beautiful! So while I think this specific desk is actually really beautiful on its own, I wanted to leave you with a few tips and tricks for styling a standing desk that you may want to consider:
- Choose a Desk to Suit Your Style - make sure to begin by choosing a standing desk that suits your style. Standing desks are generally more minimalistic and modern looking, but details vary between styles and there are color options. So pick one that suits your style best.
- Less is More - remember, a standing desk moves, so don't fill it with clutter or too many things that may tip when raising or lowering the desk. Also, this is just a personal preference to help you keep your workspace looking clean, tidy and non-cluttered 🙂
- Wide Bases - anything you place on a desk that can move should have a wide, sturdy base. If it is too thin or will be wobbly and may tip over when moving the desk.
- Add Curves and Movement - flowers, vases that are round in shape, and anything that has curves and movement to it will contrast the very angular lines of a standing desk. Be sure to add variety to your desk decor by adding at least one item that contains curve or shows movement in it.
- Create a Balanced Color Pallette - whatever specific items you choose to decorate your standing desk with, be sure that they coordinate with the desk you choose. Whether you choose to keep everything neutral, or monochrome, or you love pops of color, be sure that the overall look is balanced for your space.
- Incorporate Personal Items - don't forget to add items to your desk decor that have meaning to you. Maybe it's a nicknack you picked up on a trip, or a family photo, I still stand by the rule that less is more, but adding something personal can be a beautiful and meaningful touch.
- Manage Cables - cable management can help keep your desk space beautiful and more functional. My desk from Flexi-Spot actually has cord management built into it (another reason I love it so much!) But if yours does not, use clips and cable organizers to help keep cords managed and out of the way.
- Go Vertical - with desk space often being precious, don't be afraid to add tall decor elements to your desk instead of very wide ones.
Now for a little fun!
