This creation was another part of my Race Day segment for Fox59, however, I loved how they turned out so much, that I decided to display them in my son's transportation themed bedroom!
This is one of those projects that slowly and painfully morphed into what it became.
I had a vision, and it was a good vision, but somewhere along the line the execution went bad and it took me a while to get back on track.
I had originally used these blocks for an other purpose. So they were already painted, with white, reds and blues. I had the silly idea to cover that up with white spray paint.
Uhm. I don't know why I thought I could cover up red with white spray paint. So. After using almost an entire can of white spray paint on these things, I realized that it wasn't going to work.
My husband suggested covering the blocks with black spray paint. Oh. Duh. And then painting them white. Smart man.
I am going to use the "when you are too close to the problem you can't always see the solution" excuse on this one folks.
So we painted our red, white and blue blocks, white, then black, and then covered them with a coat of pretty Heritage White (cream) spray paint. They looked great!
Then I added my vinyl. And they looked even better. But, still not right.
So completely out of order, we sanded, distressed and added a glaze coat to the blocks.
Yes, I glazed right over the vinyl. it came off, but I loved the look of the glaze in all the cracks and crevices of the blocks and letters.
After all of that, I loved how Vintage my blocks looked! It was the perfect distressing for these!
I wish you could see all the amazing detail in these block that make them look so amazingly old, worn and vintage, but photos can not do these blocks justice.
So, the moral of the story is, sometimes when you are most frustrated and about ready to give up on a project, it will turn around and surprise you and turn into an amazing, fabulous finished project!
So keep on plugging and eventually you can create beauty from nothing!
