My daughter started reading about a year and a half ago and has made really good progress. I even told you about a great Reading Horizons program we used about a year ago...that we had great success with. We try to read every day!
But then...I heard those 3 most dreaded words.
I. Hate. Reading.
Oh my goodness the first time my daughter said that I about died!!! How can she hate reading!?!?!
Thankfully I discovered that she didn't hate reading...but the books she was required to read in school were just boring for her. Oh. Ok. I can deal with that.
And then it started again. Every time I say "Ok it's time to read!" There is a big SIGH accompanied by a "I don't want to read. I don't like reading."
Oh man. It breaks my heart I tell ya!
We choose really fun books. I let her pick out whatever she wants from the library (usually it involved princesses or the color pink!) and I will both read to her and I will have her read to me as well. We try to keep things fun around here! But sometimes it is just not what my active 6 year old wants to do.
When she is interested in however is playing games. And if it happens to involve the computer...that makes me a really awesome mom!
So you can imagine how THRILLED I was to hear that Reading Horizons came out with a new Discovery Online Software Reading Program! And I was even more thrilled when they asked if I wanted to try it out!
Simply put, the Reading Horizons Discovery Online Software Program is a fun, interactive, customizable GAME...that also happens to teach your kids some great reading skills!
The program is broken up into lessons....but they don't feel like lessons. In fact my daughter loves working on them! When you complete lessons you earn points. These points can be used to play games. My daughter is having the best time seeing how many points she can acquire 🙂
And after you get through a few levels, it unlocks books to read. The higher you go, the more items it unlocks.
My daughter honestly thinks it is just a really fun computer game to play! She loves learning and even though she doesn't always enjoy reading, I know that when she plays this game, she is actually acquiring reading skills that will help reading be easier for her!
My son is a little too young to play the games, but he loved getting in on the action, watching his sister and trying to "help."
One of the things I enjoy about this program is the ability as a parent to log in and see how much progress my daughter it making! I also have the ability to customize certain aspects of the program, like for example, every Friday could be Free Game Day! (where you don't need to use coins to play a game!)
The best news is is that they want to GIVEAWAY 1 FREE YEAR ($199 value) of this program to one of my Simply Designing readers!! Wahoo!!!
