With spring here and summer on its way, it's a great time to slough off that dry winter skin with this scrumptious Orange DIY Sugar Scrub Recipe!  A few weeks ago I shared my Lemon Sugar Scrub Recipe and while it is amazing...this Orang DIY Sugar Scrub Recipe is also wonderful!  Seriously.  You just can't go wrong with a sugar scrub recipe!

DIY Sugar Scrub

Making your own sugar scrub gives you the ability to customize it exactly how you want to, saves you money and lets you control the ingredients in it.  I have bought sugar scrubs at popular stores before (ones that use marketing terms like clean and natural) only to get home, look at the ingredient list, and wonder why it is so long and what half the ingredients are!  I mean, for reals!  Shouldn't a sugar scrub recipe be pretty straightforward?  And why do they contain so many chemicals and unknown ingredients?

Beauty companies don't have to disclose all of their ingredients and they can hide a lot in the often used ingredient item of "parfum" or "fragrance."  Yup, they consider parfum and fragrance to be proprietary ingredients so companies aren't required to disclose what is in that, which means it gives the company the opportunity to put anything in the scrub without disclosing it.  So basically, even with an ingredient list, you still don't know what is in that bottle you just purchased.

Super discouraging, right?

Which is why I choose to make my own beauty products often especially when they are easy to make yourself like this orange DIY sugar scrub.

What is a sugar scrub for?

Sugar scrubs are used to help scrub the top, dead, layer of skin off of your body.  Sugar scrubs can be used anywhere on your body, but be careful around sensitive areas.  I don't usually use a sugar scrub with granulated sugar on my face because it's a bit too harsh for me.  But I love this recipe for the rest of my body especially my tummy (hello bathing suit season!), back, legs, arms, elbows, knees, feet and hands!

How do you make a sugar scrub?

Sugar scrubs are so easy to make!  I typically use 3-4 ingredients: granulated sugar, an oil, essential oils and food coloring (optional).  You just need to mix the ingredients together and then they are ready to use!  You can mix ingredients together by hand or with a mixer, either way works.  And you can adjust the ingredients to get the consistency you want too!  More sugar will give you a drier scrub, less sugar will give you a softer scrub.  I am including the measurements that I like!  But you can really adjust this to your needs.

DIY Sugar Scrub ingredients

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup Granulated Sugar
  • ½ cup Coconut Oil
  • 15 drops Young Living Essential Oil
  • Food Coloring if you want (I left it out this time)

Directions:

  1. Place coconut oil in a bowl and stir in sugar.  If you are doing a large batch, use a stand mixer to make this easier!  Mix until well combined.
  2. Add 15 drops of Young Living Orange Essential Oil and mix together.
  3. If you want this to be an orange colored scrub, add a few drops of food coloring until you get the desired color.
  4. Place the sugar scrub into a jar with a lid to keep it fresh.

Add essential oils to your diy sugar scrub

Store in a cool dry place, out of direct sunlight.

Because this recipe is made with coconut oil, and coconut oil is temperature sensitive, you may find this scrub to be thicker in cool places and a bit easier to handle in warm places.   Don't worry though, as soon as you put a bit of this scrub in your hands, your body heat will warm it up to the perfect scrubbing consistency!

Put this by your kitchen sink to help remind you to take a moment to scrub your hands!  Your hands will thank you later!  They will be so soft, smooth, hydrated and they will smell amazing too!

I also love keeping a sugar scrub in my shower!  This DIY sugar scrub will leave your whole body (especially those knees and elbows) silky smooth and moisturized.

And these make the perfect gifts!  Give one to a neighbour, a friend, aunt, niece, daughter, BFF or even to your mom!  (Hint: it's never too early to think about mother's day!)

I only ever use pure, therapeutic grade essential oils from Young Living for all of my body scrubs because I know that not only are they safe for me, but they can provide benefits for me too!

I’m allergic to coconut. Is there another oil that could be used in place of the coconut oil for the sugar scrubs?

Yes! You can use any type of oil that you prefer honestly. Other great options would be Jojoba Oil, Grapeseed Oil or Almond oil.
