How to Make Foaming Hand Sanitizer
I love my Hand Sanitizer recipe that I recently re-shared here, but I wanted to tweak it a little bit and turn it into an amazing Foaming Hand Sanitizer!
This recipe is so super easy, full of clean ingredients, and the perfect way to moisturize and sanitize your hands.
My favorite part of this recipe is that it doesn't leave your hands sticky or feeling weird. After using it my hands feel clean and soft.
And if you love making your own things like this, you should really check out my DIY Stain Remover recipe HERE too.
Why should I make my own hand sanitizer?
There are many reasons that you should take a few minutes to make your own hand sanitizer instead of buying it at the store. Here are 6 reasons:
- Most store-bought hand sanitizers contain ingredients that are linked to fertility issues, are carcinogens, are known to disrupt hormones and are allergens. You can read more about this HERE.
- You can control the ingredients yourself.
- You can customize the smell.
- It leaves your hands soft and clean feeling, not sticky or yucky.
- Cleans your hands well when soap and water aren't available.
- Because within 26 seconds of contact, whatever you put on your body can be found in measurable amounts IN your cells! So it's best to choose GOOD things to put on your skin.
Can you make your own hand sanitizer?
Yes, you definitely can! You just need a few ingredients like Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel, and Essential Oils and in a few minutes, you can make your own hand sanitizer! Alternatively, you can use rubbing alcohol instead of witch hazel as I do HERE. (I have never tested the recipe with alcohol in a foaming bottle, so I don't know if it will foam or not. But it is a great recipe!)
How do you make alcohol hand sanitizer foam?
While this recipe doesn't contain alcohol (I use witch hazel instead), you can certainly try it with my other hand sanitizer recipe that contains alcohol, although I make no claims that it will work well. The key to making your homemade hand sanitizer foam is to simply put it in a foaming container like this one HERE. Simply add your witch hazel or rubbing alcohol, aloe vera, and essential oils to your container and your foaming hand sanitizer is complete! If you want to make an alcohol hand sanitizer, simply use this recipe HERE, and put it in a foaming container. (Although I can not say if adding alcohol to this recipe will change its foaming abilities or not as I have not tried it.)
Will this really foam?
Yes. This does really foam. The foaming pump bottle adds air to the liquid mixture as it dispenses it and it does come out in a foaming texture.
This is how foaming hand soaps work too. The major difference between foaming hand soap and hand purifier is that soap contains ingredients meant to help it foam more, so it tends to create a bigger foam then a hand purifier will.
Because this hand purifier is made with all-natural ingredients, contains no additives to help it foam, and also contains no soap, it will not foam as much as store-bought items. But I don't actually want extra additives in my all-natural recipe, or soap because then I would need to wash this off with water.
But it will foam. The amount of foaming this recipe in this bottle creates is sufficient for us to enjoy the foaming texture and my kids love it so much.
Plus this will make your purifying gel last a long time!
And I get to keep the wonderful all-natural ingredients that I know and love so much while adding a foaming texture to it.
After several times making this, I know that this does come out in a foam if you follow this recipe below exactly. If you modify the recipe below in any way, you may have mixed results.
How do you make alcohol free hand sanitizer?
This recipe is free from alcohol and is super easy to make! You simply combine Aloe Vera, Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel, and Essential Oils for the best great smelling hand sanitizer that exists! You will use the following ingredients for your foaming hand sanitizer:
- Aloe Vera
- Alcohol-Free Unscented Witch Hazel
- Young Living Thieves Essential Oil
- Young Living Lemon Essential Oil
*Please see my disclaimer above.
How do you use hand sanitizer?
- First, you want to be sure that your hands aren't covered in actual dirt etc. Wipe your hands off the best you can.
- Squeeze a small amount onto your hands, about dime-size.
- Rub your hands together ensuring to get both sides of your hands and in between your fingers.
Can I use hand sanitizer before eating?
Soap and water are always best, but when you don't have that available, hand sanitizer CAN be a good alternative IF it isn't filled with yucky ingredients that aren't safe for you. This natural, homemade hand sanitizer is a much safer option to use before eating then something you can buy at the store.
PRO TIP: And, if you DO have access to soap and water, but the soap is traditional pink or blue soap that's filled with harsh-chemicals...you can use a squirt of this foaming hand sanitizer and wash away with soap!

I love to make my own products. Thanks for posting at Funtastic Friday .

You are welcome!
Ruta
But this doesn't have anything that is a foaming agent so just putting it into a foamer bottle won't make it foam? Am I missing something?
HJ
I agree. It doesn’t work!
Ashley Phipps
Hi I am so sorry that this isn't working for you. Can you please confirm that you are following the recipe exactly as stated?
Rachel
I followed it exactly and nothing foamed
Ashley Phipps
Putting it in a foaming bottle does allow it to foam because of how the foaming bottle works. It may not be the exact same type or amount of foam that you are used to because it is made with all-natural ingredients, but it does foam! It's pretty cool what natural ingredients and a foaming bottle can do!
Ashley Phipps
Hi Ruta!
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment.
As mentioned in my post, because this hand purifier is made with all-natural ingredients, contains no additives to help it foam, and also contains no soap, it will not foam as much as store-bought items.
This does produce foam for us though! It just may not be as big as store-bought foaming things.
Have a lovely day!
Jay
Putting it on a foaming bottle isn’t working. I’ve tried many different foaming bottles and all that is happening is it’s ‘spitting out’ sanitizer rather than coming out in a stable foam. I feel the recipe doesn’t create a liquid stable enough to hold the air to create foam. Ended up putting it in a regular dispenser. Great recipe just not for creating a foam sanitizer.
Ashley Phipps
Hi there Jay!
Thanks for the note. I am so sorry this didn't produce a big of foam as desired. That is because it is made with all-natural ingredients and I haven't included any unnatural ingredients that typically help make that big huge foam possible. We do get some foam with this combo though, I am sorry you didn't have the same experience.
But I am so glad to hear that you are using it in a regular dispenser! My family loves this stuff and I use it all the time, I am glad you like the recipe.
Have a great day!
Meg
'Am I missing something?' seems the recurring question. I've read over the overwhelming length of this a couple times. The foaming pump looks like a 2oz bottle. Yet the recipe calls for only 4 tablespoons of ingredients; a little dribble for a 2oz bottle. That doesn't ad up. What's used to fill up the rest of the bottle? Also, not being unkind but this article needs editing big time. It's appearing with ridiculously large gaps/spaces while saying nothing. And please, if you're writing, understand the difference between 'then' and 'than'. This is elementary grade level English.
Ashley Phipps
Hi Meg!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write, I am Ashley and I am the owner and creator of this blog. I apologize for the error in spelling, I always appreciate it when people take the time to write to me to let me know about my spelling errors. And I also appreciate the grace that so many show me when it happens. It is a one-woman show over here and mistakes sometimes happen. Thank you so much for your kindness and grace.
A note about the math so that there is no confusion:
2 Tablespoons = 1 ounce
4 Tablespoons = 2 ounces
So this recipe should fit pretty perfectly in a 2oz bottle. But you can fill your Tablespoons just a little short of being full to make sure you have enough room for the oils just in case.
Have a lovely day!
