A big thank you to Kansas City Steak Company for sponsoring this post today. #KCSteaks
To cook the perfect steak, it is important to begin with a great cut of meat. Not all steaks are created equal. Kansas City Steak Company sent me their KC Signature Gift Boxed Steak Combo and we were excited to try them right away! I cooked up the Strip Steaks for my family and everyone loved them. The meat was lean, perfectly trimmed and tender. These cooked to perfection and I can't wait to try the Filet Mignon and Boneless Ribeye steaks too! Good steak just tastes better, so begin with a nice cut of meat.
Here is how to cook the perfect steak:
On the Grill
We think that cooking steaks on the grill makes for a delicious steak! But it is easy to overcook them, so be sure to use a meat thermometer to ensure proper cooking.
Begin by bringing your steak to room temperature. Season your steaks as desired.
Searing your steaks first ensures that the flavor and juices stay in your steak. On a grill that means putting your steaks directly over the coals if you have a charcoal grill and over high heat if you have a gas grill.
Once both sides are seared (about 1-2 minutes per side), move the steaks away from the coals (for a charcoal grill) or turn the heat down to medium (on a gas grill).
Cook the steak until the desired doneness is achieved, turning the steaks only one time.
Remove the steaks from the grill a couple of degrees before the desired doneness is achieved as the meat will continue to cook about 5 more degrees once removed from the heat.
Allow the meat to rest for 5-10 minutes prior to serving. This will allow the juices to reabsorb back into the meat giving you the most tender and juicy steak possible.
Indoors
Even though we like grilling steak, we often find that we have more control over the outcome when cooking it indoors. Plus it can be cooked inside all year long. Again, be sure to use a meat thermometer to ensure proper cooking.
Begin by bringing your steak to room temperature. Season your steaks as desired. And then preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Searing your steaks first ensures that the flavor and juices stay in your steak. To do that, place a non-stick, oven safe pan on the stove and spray with a little cooking spray. Allow the pan to heat on high heat and then place your steak in the pan. Sear steak on one side, flip and then sear on the second side.
Immediately place the entire pan into the preheated oven and allow the steak to cook until it reaches the desired doneness. You can add a pat of butter on top of the steak for added flavor if you like.
There are other ways to cook steak, but these are my two favorite ways and I always achieve delicious results! Using a meat thermometer the the key to ensuring that the steaks get cooked perfectly.
Here is a cooking chart in case you aren't sure what temperature your steak should be cooked to:
Cooking Chart
Rare: 125 degrees Fahrenheit
Medium Rare: 130 degrees Fahrenheit
Medium: 140 degrees Fahrenheit
Medium Well: 150 degrees Fahrenheit
Well Done: 160 degrees Fahrenheit
