With fall here and Thanksgiving around the corner, I thought it would be fun to create a little painted sign for my home.  I love farmhouse style signs and I also love how easy they are to create!  And since I found a really cute wood shadowbox / plaque all ready to go at the craft store the other day, I knew this would be such a fun and simple project to make!  So today I am sharing my DIY Farmhouse Thankful Sign with you along with a video of how to make it and also a free cut file for this too!  And if you are looking for other fall sign ideas, you should check out my free Hello Fall printable too!

DIY Farmhouse Thankful Sign

Homemade Farmhouse Sign

To create this DIY Farmhouse Thankful Sign, you will need:

  • 10 x 6 Wood Shadow Box (or other surface to apply this to)
  • Black Paint  (I used Americana Premium Acrylic Paint in Black)
  • White Paint  (I used Americana Premium Acrylic Paint in White)
  • Foam Paint Brushes
  • Vinyl (any color)
  • Transfer Tape
  • Silhouette

You can watch the video here:

First I painted my board with black paint and let it dry.  It is important to give the paint plenty of time to dry before applying vinyl to it.

Then I designed my cut file and cut it out using vinyl.  The color of vinyl you use doesn't matter because you are just using it as a stencil.  So you can use any piece of scrap vinyl you have laying around.

I weeded the vinyl (removed the excess vinyl from the backing paper) and then I used transfer tape to pick up the vinyl.  Then I set it on the wood surface.  After my design was centered and I rubbed it in place, I removed the transfer tape.

Then I used my foam brush to paint the board with my white paint.  Again it is important to allow the paint to fully dry before moving on.  You may want 1 or 2 coats of paint on the board.

Once the paint was dry I removed the vinyl from the board and then my project was complete!

This Farmhouse Thankful Sign was so easy to make and I really just love how cute it looks!  It is the perfect decoration to add to my home or would make a fun gift!
