Citrus Brown Sugar Face Scrub
I love making my own sugar scrubs. In fact my Homemade Sugar Scrub Recipe found HERE is one of the most popular posts on my blog!
But today I wanted to mix it up and share a great recipe for a brown sugar face scrub that will leave your face super soft. Your face will thank you.

Why should I make my own face scrub?
Making your own face scrub is a great way to save money! You can typically make scrubs with ingredients you already have at home, and it can cost pennies to make it vs. spending a lot more money at a store.
Let's not talk about the amount of money I have spent on expensive scrubs in my life...no more! DIY face scrubs for life!
In addition to saving money, making your own face scrub is a great way to control your own ingredients. You can get the exact consistency you like, the perfect blend of ingredients, modify the oils in it to meet your skin's needs, and modify the essential oils in it to meet your preferred scents.
You basically have full control over your face scrub when you make it at home and I just love that!
Can you make a brown sugar face scrub without honey?
Yes you sure can make a brown sugar face scrub without honey, my recipe below does not contain honey. While I know some people like using honey in their scrub recipes, it is not a personal favorite of mine. I have yet to make a scrub with honey (although I am not saying it won't ever happen.) While you do need something to bind your sugar together to turn it from just sugar, into a scrub, I prefer to use things like fractionated coconut oil, vs honey. It works well and is much less sticky.
Is brown sugar scrub good for your face?
I do not recommend using regular granulated sugar for a face scrub ever, it is too rough. Brown sugar, however, is smaller in size and softer so it is a great base to use for a face scrub. It is rough enough to get a great exfoliation without scratching or hurting your face. Brown sugar face scrubs are amazing!
Which sugar is best for face scrub?
There are a lot of types of sugar and some are better than others when it comes to scrubbing your face with it. Granulated sugar is too rough and harsh and I do not recommend using it for a face scrub, although it is great for a body, hand, or foot scrub. Caster Sugar is like very fine granulated sugar and is a great option for a face scrub. Brown sugar is also a smaller grained and softer sugar and is a favorite for face scrubs too. I do not recommend making a salt scrub for your face as that is also too harsh.
Is scrubbing good for face?
Scrubbing can be great for your face with a good quality face scrub. It can help to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells, remove impurities, cleanse your skin, and help wash away debris. If you exfoliate your skin regularly you will notice an improvement in skin texture. Your skin will feel so soft afterward.
What is a good natural facial scrub?
This recipe for a citrus brown sugar scrub is a great natural facial scrub. It gently exfoliates while moisturizing and refreshing your skin. It also will help to remove impurities from your skin. Not only is this easy to make, but it is an inexpensive scrub too! Plus you only need a few ingredients to make this.
What ingredients do you need for a homemade brown sugar face scrub?
- Brown Sugar
- Fractionated Coconut Oil
- Unscented Castile Soap
- Citrus Fresh Essential Oil
How do you make a brown sugar face scrub?
To make a brown sugar scrub, you simply mix together brown sugar, fractionated coconut oil, Unscented Castile Soap, and Citrus Fresh essential oil until they are well combined. You will want to store it in an air-tight container.
Why do you put castile soap in your face scrub?
Ok friends. This ingredient is a newer one that I am actually putting in all my scrubs. Have you ever used a scrub and felt like you needed to wash your hands/body/face eleventy billion times to get the oil feel off of it? Ya. Me too.
If you add castile soap to your scrub recipe, I find that it eliminates that feeling because it scrubs and cleanses at the same time!
Seriously. This is the best and I highly recommend it.
I prefer to use Dr. Bronner's Unscented Baby Castile Soap.
Why do you add essential oils to your face scrub?
Citrus Fresh is an amazing blend of essential oils containing multiple citrus oils plus spearmint. Citrus oils can be great for cleansing your face and also for purifying it. It is great to help remove impurities too.
This blend is super uplifting and happy and it makes for a very invigorating scrub! It is seriously one of my favorites.
Citrus oils can be photosensitive though so I wouldn't recommend using this within about 12 hours of spending time in the sun. I love to use my face scrubs at night time just to easily avoid that. You could also use a different essential oil instead if you prefer to stay away from photosensitive oils.
Feel free to switch up the essential oil blend used if you like, but I only recommend that you use Young Living Essential Oils. Use other brands with extreme caution, not all brands of essential oils are intended for topical use.
