Caramel Hot Cocoa Bombs
If you saw my posts the other day, I shared how to make a Hot Chocolate Bomb HERE and then I shared how to make Peppermint Hot Chocolate Bombs HERE. They are both SUPER delicious!
But if you are looking for variety, or for a more rich and trendy hot chocolate flavor combination, this caramel hot cocoa bomb might just be for you.
And they are so cool to use too!
You simply add one of these chocolate bombs to a mug full of steaming hot milk and wait for the chocolate sphere to burst open and fill your mug with caramel hot cocoa goodness.
And of course, these make great gifts! Wrap one (or a few) up in a cello bag, add baker's twine, and give to your friends, neighbors, or coworkers!
These would also make amazing stocking stuffers!
Here is a quick how-to video so you can see how these are made:
How do I make the best hot cocoa bombs?
The trick to making the best hot cocoa bombs is using the best ingredients.
That's it. You really can't go wrong if you use high-quality ingredients.
If you use melting wafers or low-quality chocolate, please don't. Your hot chocolate will not taste very good.
If you use high-quality chocolate, you will end up with yummy hot chocolate.
It really is THAT easy.
Of course, proportions of said high-quality ingredients also need to be correct but don't worry, I have you covered!
Why am I seeing hot chocolate bombs everywhere?
Well, if you have been seeing these everywhere, you are certainly not alone. Hot chocolate bombs have been taking over the TikTok and IG world because they really are just so cool! I know that Costco sold some at the beginning of the 2020 winter season (I never personally say them, but I know others who did) and I think from there, their popularity took off with people creating their own.
You can definitely buy hot chocolate bombs at some stores or small chocolate shops (like here) to get your cocoa bomb fix. But because they can be hard to find, and pricey, I wanted to give you a DIY version so you could make these yourself!
I started off making my original Hot Chocolate Bombs and then made Peppermint Hot Chocolate Bombs and now here are my Caramel Hot Cocoa Bombs.
Why should I make caramel hot cocoa bombs?
Because they are delicious and oh-so-pretty! Seriously, there is something so cool about putting a chocolate ball into a mug of warm milk and seeing it burst open with all your yummy hot cocoa ingredients. But also, because I am using high-quality chocolate, this caramel hot chocolate also tastes AMAZING!
How to make caramel hot chocolate bombs
To make caramel hot cocoa bombs, you will melt chocolate using my method for how to melt chocolate HERE, then use a mold to create half-sphered of chocolate with a hollow middle. To that, you will add hot cocoa mix and caramel and then seal the two halves together. If you'd like you can decorate the tops to make them extra pretty.
Ingredients needed to make candy cane hot chocolate bombs:
- Good Quality Chocolate - If you want really delicious hot cocoa, you will want to use high-quality chocolate. There are many options out there, but I choose to use Ghiradelli Semi-Sweet chocolate and my hot cocoa bombs turned out delicious. You can snag it HERE.
- Vegetable Oil - I use a tiny bit of this when melting my chocolate. This will help you get the perfect melted chocolate consistency while melting your chocolate in the microwave. You do not need this if you melt your chocolate in a double boiler over the stove.
- Hot Chocolate Mix - choose your favorite hot cocoa mix to use, or make your own, both are great options. My family is partial to Swiss Mix milk chocolate so I simply snagged a large container to use for these HERE.
- Caramel - in order for the caramel to melt well, you will want to use small pieces of caramel. Again, you have options, but the easiest thing to use are these Caramel Bits HERE.
- Decorations - to decorate my caramel hot cocoa bombs, I simply drizzled both chocolate and salted caramel candy melts (find them HERE) on top. You can modify your decorations as you desire.
Supplies needed to make peppermint hot cocoa bombs:
- Sphere Silicone Mold - I bought this set and it worked so well for these! I used the largest size, but since it comes with a variety, you can test out making smaller ones too! Buy it HERE.
- Piping Bag - I used these both for sealing the two sides of each sphere together and also for decorating the tops of these so you'll want these for sure.
- Spoon or decorating brush - I have made these both with the back of a spoon and with a decorating brush, both work great. But honestly, I think the spoon is the easiest.

Caramel Hot Cocoa Bomb Recipe
Makes about 6 caramel hot cocoa bombs
Ingredients:
- 6 oz Ghiradelli Chocolate Chips, Semi-Sweet
- Salted Caramel Candy Melts
- ½ teaspoon Vegetable Oil
- 6 heaping Tablespoons Hot Chocolate Mix
- 12 Heaping Tablespoons Caramel Bits
- Silicone Molds
- Decorating Bags
Directions:
- Melt your chocolate - place chocolate chips and vegetable oil into a microwave-safe dish and melt at 50% power, for 15 seconds at a time, stirring every 15 seconds until the chocolate is almost all melted. When it is almost all melted, just keep stirring until the rest of the chocolate melts. You do not want to overheat the chocolate!
- Spread melted chocolate into silicone molds - using the back of a spoon or a clean decorating brush, spread a thin layer of melted chocolate into each of the molds. Let the chocolate set and then repeat, adding a second thin layer of chocolate.
- Let the chocolate set completely - you can leave these on your countertop or place them in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes until your chocolate is completely set.
- Remove chocolate from mold - once your chocolate is set, carefully peel back the silicone mold and remove the chocolate half spheres from them.
- Add hot cocoa mix and caramel bits - I added 1 heaping Tablespoon of our favorite hot cocoa mix and 2 heaping Tablespoons of caramel bits to half of the chocolate sphere.
- Attach the chocolate halves into spheres - place a bit of melted chocolate into a piping bag and cut a very small portion off the tip. Use this to put melted chocolate onto one of the sphere halves and then carefully press the other half onto it. Hold together for a few seconds into it sets completely. You can also go back and add melted chocolate to the outside where the two parts come together if needed.
- Decorate them - Using leftover the melted chocolate in the piping bag, decorate the hot chocolate bombs as desired. Melt salted caramel candy wafers according to the package directions and drizzle that on for additional decoration. Let set completely.
- Store - store these in a cool, dry, air-tight container until ready to use. You can also put these in cello bags and give them as gifts!
- Use hot chocolate bombs - when you are ready to use these, simply heat up 1.5 cups of milk until it is steaming hot! Pour the milk into your mug and add a hot chocolate bomb. Wait and watch as it bursts open. Stir well and enjoy!
