Before we moved to Indiana, we lived in California. We made a last minute trip with our not-quite 3 year old to Disneyland before we left and made it a priority to have lots of fun, ride lots of rides and eat lots of yummy food. One of our favorite foods we tried was their Monte Cristo Sandwich. It is a delicious fried sandwich made with ingredients that don't seem quite right together, but the end result is a beautiful, delicious filling and sweet almost dessert-like sandwich that is highly addictive! Needless to say I have been wanting one every since we left Cali. So this summer I decided to stop wishing I could have another one, and make my own! In fact, this is a summer of copycat recipes for my family! I have been craving (thanks pregnancy) mexican like you can't believe it, burgers and frosted lemonades and so many other yummy foods I can buy out at restaurants, so instead of leaving home, I have been recreating my own versions of some of my favorite recipes right at home! And the best part is, we gather together as a family to eat them, almost always picnic style, outside on our deck. So today, I am sharing a really delicious, knock-your-socks-off Copycat Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe I promise will leave you craving another one!
The thing about a Monte Cristo sandwich is that it sounds really weird. So if you have never tried one, you need to trust me on this one...I promise it will be worth it!
I headed to my local Kroger Store (I live about 1 mile from Kroger so it is my go-to store) to pick up a few ingredients to make this delicious recipe. A few things I already had on hand, but I needed to grab a few things including Sargento® Sliced Cheese from Kroger. I love using Sargento® Sliced Cheese for sandwiches because they make assembling sandwiches simple! If I have sliced cheese on hand, my kids can enjoy making their own sandwich at any point during the day without me worrying about them trying to cut cheese. It also cuts down on prep time for any sandwich I make. And we all love just snacking on it too!
And our favorite thing we love to do this summer is to try new recipes, recreate our own copycat recipes and gather as a family to eat them all together! Yum! This Copycat Monte Cristo sandwich is perfect for a family meal, or any gathering! You can cut the sandwich into smaller pieces and service it at a picnic, potluck or at a cocktail party this summer too!

Copycat Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe
Makes 4 sandwiches.
Ingredients:
- 8 slices of Hawaiian Sweet Bread
- 8 slices of Sargento® Sliced Swiss Cheese
- 8 slices of Maple Honey Turkey
- 8 slices of Maple Honey Ham
- Honey Mustard
- Mayonnaise
- Triple Berry Jam
- Powdered Sugar
- 1 cup Flour
- 1 Egg
- ½ cup Milk
- 2 Tablespoons Granulated Sugar
- Dash of Cayenne Pepper
- Canola Oil
Directions:
- Begin by assembling your sandwiches. You will spread a thin layer of mustard on half of the slices of bread and a thin layer of mayonnaise on the other half of the pieces of bread. On top of one piece of bread, layer a slice of swiss cheese, 2 slices of turkey, 2 slices of ham, a second slice of swiss cheese and then a piece of bread on top. The ingredients listed above will make 4 sandwiches.
- In a bowl, mix together the flour, egg, milk, granulated sugar and cayenne pepper.
- In a pan, heat the canola oil to about 365 degrees Fahrenheit or hot enough to fry in.
- Dip both sides of your assembled sandwich into the flour mixture (it will be thick) and then fry the sandwich for a few minutes on both sides in the heated canola oil until it is golden brown.
- Remove the sandwich and place between two paper towels to remove any excess oil from the sandwich.
- Mix and heat a couple of heaping tablespoons with about 1 tablespoon of water to thin the triple berry jam over the stove. (optional)
- Cut the sandwich into fourths. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and drizzle berry sauce on top of the sandwich (or serve the sauce on the side for dipping).
- Eat while warm.
This sandwich is a perfectly sweet dessert-like sandwich that is truly to die for! It is a bit messy to eat (might I suggest using a fork and knife if you are worried about getting messy). But is it worth every drip, drizzle or mess you make!
Our family will be eating this at least a second time this summer in celebration of it just being summer and us enjoying recreating recipes! But I also plan to serve this at a pot luck picnic we are going to later this summer too. I know it will be a huge hit!
