Welcome to another fabulous day of my Summer Blog Series: Color my Home! I am so excited to have Abbey from The Cards We Drew on my blog today, showing us how she has added color to her home! (PS - I just love how pretty her craft room is. And her Dream Big Sign at the end is to die for!)
Hi everyone! I'm Abbey from The Cards We Drew and I'm so happy to be here today at Ashley's site sharing some tips on adding color to your home. Everyone has different ways of adding color and style in their houses and over the years I've seen color trends change where the traditional colors that you see in homes are going out and bright, fun, fresh colors are going in. For some people, like me, I'm scared of adding TOO much permanent change in my home for fear that it will be out of style as quickly as it was in...
BUT that doesn't mean I don't enjoy pops of color throughout my home.
Take my most recent bathroom reveal for example....
The room used to be a dark green room with reds and golds and not a lot of character. The bookshelf over the toilet was the standard builders grade oak and the room was dark and dingy. I wanted to add some character and color to the room, but in ways that I could change up if it went out of style.
So here's some tips I have for adding color to a room if you're a little unsure about going all in...
1. Paint your wall colors a lighter neutral color. Something bright that can go with tons of different color palettes. Different shades of white and gray are really popular right now because you can change the DECOR of your home without having to change the wall color too. For my ½ bath I went with a grayish color with a slight hint of green to it because it continues with the rest of the colors of my house.
2. Use your home decor to create the pops of color that can be changed off and on. I created a little wooden frame with some pennants in it to add a pop of color to my bathroom. I also took my four clear mini vases and added regular acrylic paint to the inside of them to make them colored vases.
I also like to use stencils to add some pattern, color and character to the rooms that I'm doing, as well.
Lastly re-use your home decor in new ways to add color. If you have a few wall hanging that are outdated, don't pitch them, paint over them and add unique little pieces of wall decor or art to your room. Again, these are easy things you can change on and off and you won't feel guilty later on if you want to get rid of them because they cost so little to make in the first place.
3. My last tip is to think outside the box...shop around thrift shops and garage sales...find unique statement items that may not look so pretty right then, but with the right coat of spray paint they couldn't be transformed into something really fun and funky with some color to it. I've seen people purchase little dog sculptures and owls that are straight from the 1970's, spray paint them, and turn them into really fun statement pieces in vignettes in their home. You don't always have to shop the expensive, fancy places to find great items! Try making them and customizing them yourself!
The best part of adding color in unexpected ways and DIYing it is being able to tell your guests YOU did that...people enjoy seeing other people's creativity and ideas and you could inspire people that visit your home to try new things and get a little crafty too. 🙂
