And the best part is that while we are brainstorming ideas, coming up with a supply list and building these boxes, my whole family is working together and bonding with my mom and dad! My son and daughter are learning how to work, how to serve and are also getting to know their grandma and grandpa better! And it is also a great opportunity for my husband and my dad to work together too!
And to help all of our plants grow, I am relying on a few trusted tips we have successfully used over the last few years:
Sun
Be sure your plants get the recommended amount of sunlight. Plants need shade and sun, so check your plant's recommended sunlight needs and plant in the best locations possible.
Spacing
Plants need room to grow! So don't plant your plants too close together. Again, you can find the recommended spacing on the plants or seed packets.
Water
Remember to water as much as needed! We use a timed sprinkler system, but setting up a sprinkler or a drip system will help keep your plants alive even if you aren't home!
Drainage
Be sure there is adequate drainage if planting in a planter box. This will help ensure that your plants will not be over watered.
Fertilizer
Use a great fertilizer like Miracle-Gro to help your plants thrive. We have had great success with Miracle-Gro potting soil and with their fertilizer! We have literally brought flowers back from near-death using Miracle-Gro! This stuff literally makes gardening fool-proof!
Fountain Mountain
This was a great read. So many people forget the little things when starting their garden. From the sunlight and drainage to the spacing and fertilizer. It is so easy to overlook what a newb would consider a minute detail. Thanks for the tips. 🙂

Ashley, I really liked your article! I recently started gardening, and am loving it! I find that it's really relaxing, and is a great time for me to meditate. Your tips were really helpful, and I especially was interested to read that plants need space to grow! I thought that you could almost stack smaller plants on top of each other. But now I'll make sure to read the seed packets to find out how far apart they should be! Thank you for the post!
