I was so excited when I found out that I would be building a DIY Flower Tower for The Home Depot that I couldn't wait to get started! So last week I headed off to The Home Depot armed with my list in hand, ready to get everything I needed to start building and gardening! (You can see Part 1 and my completed Flower Tower Project plus a video HERE.)
Here is what you will need to complete this project yourself:
DIY Flower Tower Supply List
- Yardgard 4' x 50' 14-gauge Welded Wire Fencing
- Scotts 4' x 220' Landscape Fabric (need 4' tall but can do less in length)
- Tinner Snips
- Zip Ties - 50 pack (approx. 7" work great)
- Garden Spade
- Utility Knife
- Flower Pot, 12" or larger
- Work Gloves
- Potting Soil (the big bag)
- Plants (as needed)
Here are a few things I learned about my product list while working on this project:
Welded Wire Fencing
I could not find 4' tall 14-gauge welded wire fencing at The Home Depot I went to. So I found a really nice Home Depot employee to help me out. He couldn't find it either so he looked it up for me. Apparently, their store hadn't carried this for over a year! The employee was so nice and he took the time to explain that 16 gauge and 14 gauge are only slightly different in size. He then inquired about what I was using it for and after talking about it, we both determined that for my project, 16 gauge would work just great! The Home Depot has great customer service!
Scotts Landscape Fabric
You will not need 220' of this fabric. I was able to find a 100' roll which I bought instead! And I still have plenty left over to make another Flower Tower! Remember you can be flexible with your supply list.
Tinner Snips
Unless you have super human strength, you WILL want these! The 16 (or 14) gauge wire is tough to cut through and having a good pair of wire snips is a must-have. You can tell in the video I made that it took a little muscle to get through the wire with the tinner snips! I'm not sure how you would cut it without them!
Zip Ties
You can find these in the electrical section at The Home Depot. Just saying. 🙂 Thankfully the sweet workers at The Home Depot helped me to locate these as I was clearly having trouble! Hahaha
Garden Spade
This worked great for helping to plant the flowers and loosen the soil. Every gardener needs a good garden spade!
Utility Knife
I used my utility knife a lot! From helping me to cut the landscape fabric to helping me open my flower containers (carefully!), having a sharp utility knife handy during this project is well worth it!
Flower Pot
I had such a hard time picking out a flower pot! There were so many beautiful choices at The Home Depot! My daughter helped me choose and although the wooden one I ended up picking wasn't her first pick, she sure helped me get some great photos of the HUGE selection of Flower Pots that The Home Depot has!
The size you choose is up to you! But I would recommend at least using a 12" in diameter pot. I used a 16" pot and it worked perfectly for my over-sized Flower Tower!
Work Gloves
Can I admit that I have never had my own pair of work gloves!? I've always used my husbands ill-fitting gloves. So I was really excited to have an excuse to buy my own work gloves...finally! The Home Depot has an amazing selection of cute Woman's Gloves! It was hard to choose but I love the fit, feel and style of my new garden gloves!
Potting Soil
Buy the Big Bag. I repeat, buy the big bag. And ask someone to help you load this into your cart and your car. I got it into the cart, but could not manage to get it into my car. A really kind Home Depot employee saved the day for me!
Plants
You can choose any variety you want! Being spring in Indiana, about the only thing available was pansies. I really do love pansies though and I am excited to watch my Flower Tower bloom and grow! I chose to go with mostly purple pansies, but I picked up a few white (with purple centers) pansies too! Another great options would be Petunias, but the options are really only limited by what you can locally buy!
The number of plants you will need will depend on two factors, how large your pot is and how high you make your Flower Tower! My pot was 16" diameter and I only took two rows off of the bottom of my metal fencing so it is just under 4' tall (more on that later). I used 115 pansies and filled every other hole with a flower. It was a lot of flowers, but will be so pretty when the pansies grow a bit more!
There were many times when I asked for help while at The Home Depot. Everyone was always so nice and so helpful. It made my shopping trip so much easier especially since I had my two kiddos in tow!
Besides the brief twirling and dancing in the momentarily warm and sunny weather, my daughter helped me take photos while at The Home Depot that day! She also was a big help choosing and selecting materials. This is really a fun project to get your kids involved in too!
And remember that the employees at The Home Depot are super nice! If you pull your car around and ask, someone will help you load all of your heavy supplies into your car for you! Thanks Home Depot!

This is so pretty that I had to pin it twice! Thanks for the inspiration! I just planted my first garden this past weekend and I have a lot to learn. Your tips are so helpful:)

Simply stunning, my friend! I LOVE pansies! They are my sorority flower! Pinning so I can remember to do this next year when we have our house built!

I can't wait to get mine tower built but going have to wait a few days as we had thunderstorms move into the area.
Now, speaking of lesson learned, a person should also wear safety goggles when cutting fencing or other wire or cutting wood products. I learned the hard way and now I see to it that my goggles are Always handy.

Colleen,

Thanks for the great reminder.

And I can't wait to see your flower tower! We are due to get thunderstorms here this week too.

Ashley
Diana Miller
So pretty, Ashley! Any tips on another location for it if you don't have a big enough entrance/porch?
Ashley Phipps
Thank you Diana!

You could put this so many places! It would look great in a garden area or another portion of your yard that is landscaped. Or even on a back porch!

You could also modify this to make it smaller to fit in a smaller area.

Thanks so much for stopping by!
Ashley

Can the same planter be used the following year?
Ashley @ Simply Designing
Yes it definitely can! You may need to refresh some of the soil though or add more.
