I know that making your own raw sugar scrub is popular right now and while I am sort of jumping on the bandwagon, I've actually been creating raw sugar scrubs for YEARS...long before blogs existed. Seriously. However, my version is different than any other version I've seen out there. And it smells delicious too! So you will definitely want to stick around for this recipe: Coconut Lime Raw Sugar Scrub!
This homemade raw sugar scrub takes only 3 simple ingredients.
It is all natural and creates a wonderfully amazing exfoliating scrub for your hands, body or feet! You will love this!
Here are the ingredients to make coconut lime raw sugar scrub:
- 1 cup Raw or Turbinado Sugar (more on this later)
- 2 Tbs Coconut Oil
- 1 Lime
Why do you need to use raw sugar instead of regular sugar to make a sugar scrub?
The key to this scrub is in the sugar. I have tried scrubs using granulated and brown sugar and they are nice, but using Raw Sugar definitely gives you a deeper exfoliating scrub.
So what is Raw Sugar (aka Turbinado)? Turbinado sugar is less-processed and less-refined then other sugars. It is sugar derived from natural sugar cane, it is brown in color and has larger crystals than granulated or brown sugar.
Where can you buy raw sugar to make a raw sugar scrub? At your local grocery store. Seriously. Look down your baking aisle right next to your granulated, brown and artificial sugars. This is not expensive and has a ton of great uses! Or you can always purchase it from HERE.
Doesn't it just look delicious!?
Coconut Oil is also available at most local grocery stores or it is available for purchase HERE.
To make your scrub you will simply mix the above ingredients by spoon or hand.
If your coconut oil is in a solid state, you can carefully soften it by placing it in the microwave for about 1 minute.
I juiced a fresh lime for my scrub! Yum! I love citrus scents and lime is one of my all-time favorites!
This raw sugar scrub is so yummy smelling you could almost eat it. Well, you could, it is technically all food...but I prefer to scrub my hands with it!
How amazing is that! Coconut Lime Raw Sugar Scrub is one of my favorite hand scrubs with only 3 ingredients and it smells AMAZING!
Making your own raw sugar scrub with this recipe is so easy and makes a wonderful gift for a friend, sister, mom, teacher or neighbor!
Who wouldn't love to get a cute little jar of yummy smelling sugar scrub!?
And I even created a FREE PRINTABLE LABEL for you!
I printed mine out on an adhesive label sheet and stuck it right on my cute glass jar!

Thanks for sharing this. Would make a perfect teacher's gift. Does it need to be stored a certain way? Thanks.
Ashley Phipps
Thanks so much Kim!! And thanks for pinning and sharing it too!

Dawn,

You are welcome!

It can just be stored at room temperature. All three ingredients are fine at room temperature. And the coconut oil actually goes solid if it gets too cold so room temperature is best.

I am not totally sure how long this keeps for...I never have it around long enough to go bad...but I imagine it will be just fine for MONTHS!

What type of Avery labels do you print these on? And then did you cut them out?
Ashley Phipps
I used just a full-sheet printable label. Available at any office supply store 🙂

What is the shelf life of this scrub?
Alejandra GarcÃa
Same Cuestion.
Ashley Phipps
I've had mine last several weeks without a problem! I always go through it before it goes bad honestly!!

Did you mix some zest in as well? Or is that just on top or decoration?
Ashley Phipps
You can do either! The zest won't harm the scrub! So you can add it in or just put a little on top for presentation!

For some extra moisturizing, I take one or two Vitamin E capsules, cut them open, and squeeze all their goodness into my scrubs. Just an idea to try for those with super dry skin. I've never done coconut and lime and will definitely try this one!
Ashley Phipps
Great idea Jennifer!

vitamin E is also to prolong the shelflife of the diy scrubs
Laura Railing
This is perfect! I am in charge of crafts for our moms group and love this idea! I added a little bit of the pink dish soap that's also moisturizing so it leaves a little bit less of an oily feel and can clean grime off too. I repinned this to share with everyone 😉
Ashley Phipps
Oh that's a great idea Laura! Thanks for repinning!

I am really looking forward to trying this as a favor for a baby shower I'm throwing! Quick question... how much does the recipe above make? I'm having about 15 people and the glass jars I purchased are 8oz jars... just trying to figure out how much sugar I'll need to buy. Thanks for the recipe!
Marisa Caranza
Just made some of this and I can't smell the lime at all.
Nancy
I found you on Pinterest and going to try this for an Easter gift :o)
Tammie
This sounds great!! Question ..... If I were to make a grapefruit or lemon fragranced scrub, what oil would I use as I don't think I'd use coconut??
Ashley Phipps
You can use nearly any good quality oil you want Tammie! But I agree that coconut oil might overpower lemon or grapefruit scent. I would suggest using grapeseed oil instead. I have used that before with great success and it has much more mild of a fragrance!
Rachel
Hi! How long does this stay fresh? Does the lime juice go bad over time..l thanks!
Ashley Phipps
Great question. Yes this will eventually go bad. I imagine it will keep for about a month or so before it starts to go bad. But I have never had any around that long to know!
Sam
Weird question but where did you get the jar?
Ashley Phipps
Hi Sam. The jar came from Hobby Lobby. But you can find something similar at nearly any craft store!
Laura Ford
Would this work with brown sugar as well? I want to do it with kids and I think the larger pieces of sugar might be too rough on the little ones hands.
Ashley Phipps
Oh yes it definitely would would with brown sugar too!
Gina
When the coconut oil solidifies it creates a thick layer on top of the sugar and lime juice, mixing doesn't help. Any suggestions? I love using the larger sugar crystals!!
Susanne Lauber
After stirring all of the ingredients, I can't really smell the lime juice. Also, is the coconut oil just supposed to just be softened or melted/liquid? It doesn't really mix in well when it's just softened. Also, what's the consistency of this supposed to be? Mine seems kind of runny. Maybe too much lime juice? I added more sugar to try to thicken it up. It did some. but I'm wondering if that's partly what killed the lime scent? I used the samevkind of coconut oil pictured, too, and it doesn't have any coconut smell to it at all?
Siam
Hi, thanks for the recipe!
Can I use this scrub on eczema hands? TQ
Ashley Phipps
Hi. I do not have eczema and can't really advise on this or not. I know that skin can be extra sensitive. I would personally use a more fine sugar instead of raw sugar and do a small test first to see how your skin can handle a scrub.
